Betlemme, Cisgiordania

Tutte e dieci le stanze del Walled Off Hotel guardano sul muro – e il muro è la barriera di separazione che sigilla Israele dalla Cisgiordania (anche se si spinge, a volte, con scarti, al di là dei confini ufficiali). La vista, da questo albergo-avamposto nell’incapsulata Betlemme, non è mai esattamente la stessa: i tagli di luce sono differenti, da alcune stanze si può vedere, oltre il muro, un insediamento israeliano considerato illegale dagli accordi internazionali. Le nuvole, che passano molto al di sopra dell’orizzonte di cemento, portate dal khamaseen, il vento imbalsamatore che comincia a soffiare in aprile dal deserto arabico, appaiono diverse a seconda della finestra da cui ci si sporge. La polvere, no, è la stessa. Una polvere più antica della storia. Cambia e balla con il declinare della luce. Le stanze dell’albergo “fuori dal muro” sono in ombra quasi tutto il giorno.

È difficile immaginare un hotel più sul confine di questo, ideato dall’artista disturbatore geniale Banksy, aperto al pubblico dal 20 marzo scorso, e già con la fila per prenotare una stanza. Il confine è politico, sociale, religioso, esistenziale. Betlemme è sotto l’autorità palestinese. Ma la zona dell’albergo è controllata dagli israeliani. Tutte le strade per raggiungerlo passano in territorio palestinese e non possono essere attraversate ufficialmente dai cittadini israeliani. Betlemme è sacra per i cristiani perché è il luogo di nascita di Gesù, figlio di Dio. Ma Gesù è un profeta cardine per la religione musulmana, combatterà insieme al Mahdi e contro l’Anticristo alla fine dei tempi. A Betlemme è nato Davide, il re più amato della storia d’Israele. Nel 2002, l’esercito israeliano assediò per 39 giorni 200 palestinesi che si erano barricati nella Basilica della Natività. Il confine passa su memorie antichissime e sui ricordi di ieri. Lascia tatuaggi sui pensieri come le orme di stencil che l’inglese Banksy lascia sui muri del mondo. L’artista-phantomas di strada, la cui identità sembra sempre sul punto di essere svelata, aveva già lavorato sulla barriera di Betlemme, negli anni passati.

Ora ha concepito un albergo borderline che è un’installazione d’arte. Arte politica, come quasi sempre nel caso di Banksy. Ma pure un cortocircuito di idee e atmosfere. Il Guardian ha definito il Walled Off,  “un hotel, un museo, una protesta e una galleria, tutto in luogo solo”. Banksy, ridendo sotto la maschera, ha elogiato la vista dalle stanze come “la più brutta del mondo”. Nel sito (banksyco.uk/rooms.html) viene citata una frase di Diane Arbus, inquieta fotografa di freaks: “Vivere con un’opera d’arte è qualcosa di diverso che sbirciarla da un angolo dell’occhio”. L’idea qui è di vivere dentro un’opera d’arte.

Quindi un altro confine attraversa l’albergo: quello tra arte e realtà. Sogno e veglia. Non a caso si evocano fantasmi coloniali – anche politici – del passato governo britannico. Lo stile di raffinata decadenza richiama indirettamente un albergo storico, il Baron di Aleppo, oggi su un confine ancora più sofferto di questo: sulla linea del fronte nella battaglia urbana più triste di Siria, tra tregue e cecchini, ospita rifugiati nelle stanze dove abitarono Winston Churchill e Agatha Christie. Nell’albergo di Betlemme, l’ironia affilata delle opere di Banksy fa da contrappunto all’eleganza fané: un letto ha come testata un murale in cui un poliziotto in casco e un manifestante in kefiah si prendono a cuscinate in una nuvola di piume. Dei ghepardi sembrano appoggiati sullo schienale di un divano dal disegno zebrato. Un pianoforte nella hall – forse stregato – suona da solo qualche motivo perduto nella memoria. C’è qualcosa che rimanda alla stanza di bordello a Las Vegas creata dall’artista californiano Edward Kienholz; e, con qualche brivido, all’Overlook hotel di Stanley Kubrick in Shining. Nella vasca della suite presidenziale da 965 dollari a notte, l’acqua zampilla da un serbatoio con fori che sembrano di proiettile. Nel dormitorio da 30 dollari, i letti a castello sono gli stessi degli alloggiamenti dei soldati israeliani. Il genius loci flirta con suggestioni storiche e oniriche nelle stanze allestite da Sami Musa e Dominique Petrin, oltre che da Banksy. Appoggiandosi ai davanzali viene un pensiero strano. Se i muri e i confini fossero morbidi come i cuscini di piume, con leggerezza, in sogno, si potrebbe attraversarli.

BORDERLINE HOTEL

If there is a borderline hotel room in the wide world, this is probably at the Banksy’s strange  and tuned with history Walled Off Hotel, in Bethlehm, Cisjordania. All the ten hotel rooms – from the Presidential suite to the bunk beds dormitory – face a concrete wall, not just an ordinary one, but the serpentine West Bank barrier winding between and around Israel and Palestine (an unofficial border as it stretches somewhere in Palestinian territory according to the International law). Is it a security fence or an apartheid wall? The answer depends often (not always) from which side of the border are you asking. For conceptual phantom street artist Banksy is “the worst view in the world” for a hotel. So he decided to open one right here and put a neon sign shining over the entrance.

The point is that the view can be as imaginative as in Giacomo Leopardi’s famous sonnet L’Infinito (Infinite). The panorama anyway is much grimmer than in Marche hilly landscape. The light is poor and you can glimpse the sky over the concrete edge as the clouds goes by pushed by khamaseen, a dry embalmer wind that blows from April through June from the Arabic desert. Clouds seem different in every room. From some windows you can watch an Israeli settlement growing  over the hills beyond the barrier. You can imagine people going through check points somewhere along the wall. You can imagine fights and riots and plots. It is difficult to imagine a place that is closer to a border than this Banksy’s hotel. The border lines here are multiple. National, religious, social, existentialist. Bethlehm is a holy town for Christians, because is Jesus place of birth. Still Jesus is a prophet for Islam and a key figure in his escatology since He will battle the Antichrist at the end of the times, shoulder to shoulder with the Mahdi, few kms from here, in Jerusalem. Bethlehm is were ancient Israeli King David was born too. The heroic slayer of Goliath. A myth and a most beloved figure for many Hebrews. In 2002, a group of Palestinian fighters were sieged by Israeli forces in the Church of Nativity for 39 days. Border is more than a abstract line here. More than a concrete wall. It is a shadow, it is a tattoo in the soul. Banksy guessed this and acted accordingly, as the provocative artist that he is. After the opening of the hotel, on March 20, is there already a cue to book a room with a bad view. The British artist hopes to have Israelian customers. The hotel area is under Israeli control but all the roads to access it and all the historical sites are in Palestinian territories. For an Israeli citizen travelling here is officially forbidden. Still it looks that somebody already sneaked across the check points. The same way that Banksy himself did through a tunnel in Gaza years ago and here in Bethlehm to spray his disturbing ironic painting on the same wall that now faces his hotel.

The Walled off  is an art installation at a cross-point of borders, it is a laboratory for imagination (from a former pottery workshop). The Guardian newspaper called it “a hotel, museum, protest and gallery all in one”. The style is fancy and evocative of colonial times and British rule and of famous hotels like the Baron in Aleppo, today on an even crueler border, close to the frontline in the urban battle. At the Walled Off In the Artist Room for 265 dollars per night you can nap with your pillows attached to a mural painting with a battle of pillows between an Israeli guard and a Palestinian rioter. In the Presidential suite (965 per night) you can bath in a oversized tube filled by a water tank that have signs of bullets holes. You can try a Israelian soldier bunk bed for 30 dollars in the budget barracks. Or you can just relax in the reception room listening to some tunes from a self playing piano, that makes me remember the ghostly juke-box in the ‘50s brothel room recreated by Californian artist Edward Kienholz, or – with some thrills – the waltz of the dead at the end of Stanley Kubrick’s Shining. Yes, the conceptual confort zones, the Banksy tromp-l’oeil (you have to leave 1000 dollars deposit to prevent thefts or damage to the art), the faded elegance of the interiors (conjured by Sami Musa and Dominique Petrin together with Banksy), everything is an evocation of ghosts from remote and near pasts. The website (walledoffhotel.com) quotes from the photographer Diane Arbus, a kind of ghosts seeker: “To live with an artwork is something different, to glimpse it from the corner of your eye”. Here you live inside the artwork. Ghosts here can be dreary or gentle. Like dreams. In a room of the Wall Off hotel you can dream of a border as soft as a pillow full of feathers. And wake up in a sharp shade from a barrier that cuts your bed in two sides.
