Al rumore ci si abitua. Alla vista no. Ed è una fortuna. In questo hotel di charme sotto il Sydney Harbour Bridge, le viste sono multiple. Quasi sempre sorprendenti. Si è fermi, quasi a pelo d’acqua. Ma l’impressione è di trovarsi sul ponte di una nave pronta a salpare. Il centro di Sydney, con le sue lusinghe, i grattacieli nuovi e il quartiere vecchio, l’energia e, purtroppo, il rumore, sono a distanza di passeggiata. In pochi passi si raggiunge il Circular quay, con le sue promenades, e l’oasi verde dei Botanical Gardens.

Il design minimal al Pier One contrasta piacevolmente con la vista massimalista sulla Walsh Bay. Non è un panorama quieto, quello che si gode da questo boutique hotel di Sydney: colpisce la vista “fratturata” della baia dalla grande struttura metallica del ponte. Con il Luna Park e l’Opera House sullo sfondo. Sono vedute energetiche, vibranti. In stile metropolitano. Si gustano bene dal bar-ristorante sull’acqua, il Gantry.  Magari con uno di quei cocktail che miscelano alcol e vitamine, di moda tra la gioventù australiana (una vodka vitaminizzata è stata appena lanciata sul mercato con la promessa poco credibile di mettere fine ai mal di testa del dopo-sbornia). O, per chi preferisce il vino, una coppa di shiraz della Barossa valley. Tanto per entrare nello spirito del luogo. Le sirene delle navi e il traffico dal ponte finiscono per entrare nell’atmosfera.

Certo, bisogna saper scegliere la camera giusta. Quelle con gli scorci migliori sono al secondo piano. Splendida la suite con deck privato e vasca a guscio d’uovo stile loft. Molto suggestiva anche la Harbour suite, con le travi a vista e il soffitto a capriata, anche se le finestre sono un po’ strette. Nelle camere standard, il livello scende e non vale la spesa, che parte dai 200 euro al giorno per le camere e i 400 euro per le suites. Lo charme ha il suo prezzo. Anche sotto un ponte.

 

 

 

CHARME UNDER THE BRIDGE

You will get used to the noise. Not the same for the views. Which are amazing. It is mainly because of the location: this charme hotel is under the Sydney Harbour Bridge (just aside of it) and enjoys multiple views on the Walsh Bay with the iconic Opera House in its periscope. Well, we are not talking of a submarine, but the sensation that Pier One hotel gives is as being aboard of a flat boat, the kind of a comfortable luxury barge. On the point to sail off. The center of Sydney, with its contemporary towers and older neighbourhoods, its energy and blandishments – is just a stroll away. In few steps you reach the Circular Quay with the large pedestrian areas and the green oasis of the Botanical Gardens.

The minimalist design of the interiors counterpoints the maximalist view of the Walsh Bay. It is not a quiet panorama. The viewer is striken by a “fractured” regard on the bay; it is a metal framework from some window or the imposing structure of the bridge. It is a view imbued with urban energy. More metrosexy than metrosexual. A good place to enjoy the water-city views is The Gantry restaurant and bar. The perfect way to enter in the Aussie mood here is to sip an energezing alcohlic cocktail, a very popular drink among Sydney young crowds (a vitamin vodka has just been released with the hard-to-believe promise to put an end to nasty hang overs). Or, for the wine lovers, a glass of shiraz  from Barossa valley vineyards. The ships sirens and the traffic sounds from the bridge makes the background music. As I said, it is not a quiet panorama. With a lot of vibes though.

The choice of a room is a fundamental point in this boutique hotel. The ones at the second floor have better views than those at third and ground floor (which should be avoided). Probably the best view of the hotel is from the Harbour Balcony Suite that has its private deck. The taste of the furnishings is simple and refined with a playful eggshaped loft-style freestanding bathtub. It has got its view too. The Harbour suite (without balcony) is also very atmospheric thanks to the exposed beams and the cathedral ceilings. The long narrow windows can displease somebody though. In the standard rooms the level goes down (bathrooms are too tiny for instance) and the rates – which starts from around 200 euros – don’t match. The suites (starting at 400 e) are good value instead. Charme comes with a price. Even under a bridge.
